Nightmares

It stood in the corner. A monster from the depths of my nightmares manifested into physical form, towering over my bed with flushed white eyes. Its body was black. It had sharp features yet no face, a giant dark mass with long arms and fingers with claws at each end. I shivered when I saw its head. It was dominated by one thing; a mouth. Red on the inside, black on the outside, lined with layers of jagged yellow teeth of a shark. Even though it had no eyes, I could feel its stare. The mouth itself seemed to be looking at me, watching me, gazing down into my soul, and at my body.  It was like a hunter examining its prey before the attack.
I pulled the comforter over my head and hid beneath the vibrant colors of the floral pattern. I started to pray in whispers for angels and sunshine to banish the black back to hell; but no trumpet sounded. No light ever came. The room grew quiet. The air stale in the silence. The world slowed down. Time stood still. The clock ticking on the wall in a steady heartbeat faded and then died. I felt my own heart die as well.
            Then came the attack.
The floorboards creaked, the walls gave silent screams, and the children's toys, on the floor in a disarray mess, closed their eyes. The covers were ripped off of me and thrown into the air. I watched in slow motion as the creature came towards me. It's black form twisted inhumanly as it got onto my bed and climbed up to me.
There was no time, the clock had stopped, and the scream in my throat that wanted to come out never did. Instead the vibrations rang in my head and rattled my eyes as the demon jumped on top of me.
It pushed me down, its weight crushing me into the soft pillow mattress as it locked my arms and legs in place. I did struggle, I tried to escape, but it over powered me. It had played this game before and I hadn't. It knew my moves before I did and countered me at every turn.
"Come play with me," it whispered in a voice I knew but could not place. It touched me, and I couldn’t stop it. It laughed a sinister chuckle that bounced off the walls and pierced my ears. Its mouth got closer and closer until I was looking down a dark tunnel that led into a boiling stomach.
Every touch burned my skin with fingerprints as it grabbed a hold of me and started to chew away. Its teeth dug into my flesh with a horrid hunger. I never felt such dread. I kept saying, "Wake up. Wake up." But it answered:
"You are awake."
The demon devoured me, piece by piece; first my childhood, then my dreams. It went deeper, dug inside and consumed all my smiles and memories. Deeper; munching away my fate into oblivion. Then eventually, it swallowed me whole; my body, my innocence.
The clock started to tick again and the monster gone. But in my dreams I still see his face and how I'll never be the same again
